Learning and Development for PAs

Enhance your knowledge and skills and find out what learning and development opportunities you can access as a PA on the Isle of Wight.

Isle of Wight Council Accredited PA’s

We have a robust package that we expect all our accredited PA’s to engage with which is currently fully funded by the Isle of Wight Council.  There are two mandatory courses around safeguarding and the others can be chosen by you to best suit your learning needs.

The PA Market Team will help you access the learning platform and discuss any issues.  You will be invited to a support session initially to show you how to use the system.

Mandatory Learning

  1. Safeguarding Adults

– For those who have existing knowledge about safeguarding processes and responsibilities, and require a shorter refresher: Click this link to complete our e-learning course – Safeguarding Adults

  1. Safeguarding Children

A short e-learning course for every PA to undertake to raise awareness that safeguarding children that you may come into contact with in people’s homes, or in the community is everyone’s responsibility – Click this link to access our e-learning course – Introduction to Safeguarding Children

Essential Skills Package

  1. Professional Boundaries– This 3-hour course is designed to give participants an opportunity to understand the boundaries between good and poor practice in health and social care work.

  1. First Aid– This provides PA’s with the skills and knowledge required to provide appropriate first aid care and manage life threatening situations.

  1. Moving and Handling of People– This learning is designed to ensure people are moved safely and the PA adheres to good posture and safer handling techniques for their own safety.

For any new PA or those that have no previous experience of moving and handling:

  1. Medicines in Care– This learning is designed to ensure that safe practices are adhered to around the administration of medication.

– For IWC Accredited PA’s who administer medication, we strongly advise you complete both these learning activities to ensure your skills are of a high standard: Click this link to book a place on the Isle of Wight ICB Medicines Optimisation team ‘Medicines in Care’ course – Medicines in Care (ICB MOT) and complete the e-learning course – Managing Medicines

– For Non IWC Accredited PA’s – We strongly advise you attend this course and discuss your responsibilities with the Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board’s Medicines Optimisation Team (ICB MOT) – Medicines in Care Training Booking Form

You may also wish to undertake the short online course provided by Adult Community Learning – ‘Understanding the safe handling of medication’.

 

  1. Dementia Awareness– The Isle of Wight Council and the Dementia Awareness Partnership are offering free courses around Dementia. Click here Dementia Poster to view a poster for more information and how to arrange a booking.

  1. Epilepsy Awareness– This course ensures PA’s have the appropriate knowledge and skills to support those with epilepsy.

  1. Rescue Medication in Epilepsy– This course provides an understanding of different medications in epilepsy.

  1. Self-Neglect and Hoarding– This learning will offer support to PA’s with the challenges of working with people who have an extreme lack of self-care.

– IWC Accredited PA’s – There are two introductory e-learning modules that you are advised to complete – Self-neglect and an Introduction to Hoarding.

 

  1. Scams Awareness – This online learning will help you recognise a scam and what to do, this information can also be passed onto any vulnerable people that you may be supporting to reduce the risk of them being scammed.

Further ‘on demand’ digital learning available for IWC Accredited PA’s only on the Learning Hub

Once you complete any of these above, you will then be reminded to refresh your knowledge in based on the frequency times above advised within guidance from Skills for Care used by the wider care workforce.

  • Knowledge element of the Care Certificate – IWC Accredited PA’s can access 15 e-learning modules that cover all 15 standards to prepare you in gaining the knowledge and understanding element of the nationally recognised Care Certificate.

Please note that completing these does not award you with a full Care Certificate.  You should contact one of our local providers such as HTP College or the IOW College to discuss this further.

  • Other learning activities can be found within the ‘Find Learning’ tab. These are offered for you to complete once.

Further learning opportunities for all PA’s

Adult Community Learning offers learning opportunities for adults 19 years and over. Their wide range of workshops and courses can help you:

  • learn new skills or improve existing ones
  • meet new people
  • gain a qualification

Their courses and workshops include:

  • Arts and crafts workshops
  • Computer courses
  • Maths and English functional skills
  • Career advice
  • Online short CPD courses

They also offer short online courses around social care, (typically around 4 hours) and include topics such as:

  • Understanding stress
  • Understanding depression
  • Understanding anxiety
  • Substance misuse awareness
  • Understanding the safe handling of medication
  • Mental Capacity Act
  • Alcohol awareness
  • And much more..
